DETROIT — The Detroit Pistons face a deepening contract crisis as All-Star center Jalen Duren is expected to skip the team's official media day on Monday amid a contentious extension dispute. The standoff has fractured the relationship just days before training camp, with the 22-year-old center distancing himself from the organization over the terms of Detroit's latest offer.

After a breakout 2025–26 season in which he earned All-Star and All-NBA Third Team honors for the first time while helping Detroit win 60 games in the Regular Season, Duren rejected a recent five-year, $200 million extension proposal. As detailed by The Athletic on Sunday, the fracture centers on strict, year-round monthly weight and conditioning clauses inserted by the front office into the deal, demands Duren's camp views as disrespectful.

The 13th draft pick out of Memphis in 2022 had initially considered visiting the facility to support his teammates, but the contract friction is keeping him away. A high school standout at Montverde Academy who built his game on raw physicality and elite rebounding, Duren spent the entire summer apparently distancing himself from the team. Several teams, including the Sacramento Kings and Milwaukee Bucks, have been closely monitoring the situation, according to various reports during the offseason.

Time is short. Training camp launches on Tuesday, and as a restricted free agent Duren has until Thursday — if the deadline is not extended by the Pistons — to make a career-defining choice. He can sign a long-term deal or take a one-year qualifying offer and gamble on himself to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. The Pistons open the 2026–27 Regular Season at home against the Boston Celtics on October 20.
