ZAGREB — IBF heavyweight world champion Filip Hrgovic is preparing for his first title defence, with promoter Frank Warren confirming that the bout is being targeted for Croatia. Hrgovic, who secured the belt in August with a ninth-round stoppage of Moses Itauma, is expected to face mandatory challenger Frank Sanchez.
Speaking to Playbook Boxing, Warren confirmed the arrangement, stating, "We paid him to step aside for the Itauma fight so yeah, he will be the opponent. We will do that in Croatia, I hope, we are just working on that and it’s another big heavyweight world title fight." The contest is currently being discussed for either December or January.
Sanchez, who is eager to become the first Cuban heavyweight champion, expressed his readiness for the mandatory encounter. "The fight will happen as soon as Hrgovic is ready. I understand it may be December or January," Sanchez said. "I look forward to beating Hrgovic. I’m faster and stronger than him."
While the prospect of a homecoming bout remains the primary focus, logistical challenges persist regarding the venue. The 11,000-seater Kranjčevićeva Stadium in Zagreb is currently undergoing renovations and is not scheduled to be ready for events until March, leaving the specific location for the winter fixture to be finalised.
