SHANGHAI — Great Britain have secured two gold medals on day two of the World Track Cycling Championships as the women's team pursuit quartet and Matthew Bostock delivered titles in Shanghai, China.
Erin Boothman, Anna Morris, Josie Knight and Millie Couzens overturned an early deficit in the women's team pursuit final to beat world champions Italy by more than five seconds, while Bostock, 29, made his decisive move at the halfway point of the men's scratch race and held on to take his first world title.
There was further success for Great Britain in the men's team pursuit, where Henry Hobbs, Noah Hobbs, Ethan Vernon and Ollie Wood defeated France in the bronze medal ride-off. Bostock also earned a bronze for riding in the earlier rounds of that event, while Denmark beat Italy in the gold medal race to claim their fourth consecutive title in the discipline.
In the women's sprint, Sophie Capewell, 28, advanced to the semi-finals after taking two victories against China's Jiang Yulu in their best-of-three quarter-final. Capewell, who won silver in the women's team sprint alongside Rhianna Parris-Smith and Emma Finucane on day one, will be joined in the last four by Finucane, who won the sprint title in 2023 and 2024.
GB's preparations for the championships have been overshadowed by the withdrawal of Matt Richardson, with British Cycling confirming the 27-year-old Olympic medallist's removal from the squad amid reports he is under investigation for misconduct. Richardson, who had been expected to contend for medals in the individual sprint and keirin, said he would co-operate with the British Cycling investigation into the allegations, as Great Britain built on Matthew Bostock's scratch race gold in Shanghai earlier at the meeting.
