LONDON — Olympic gold medallist Katy Marchant has announced her retirement from cycling, closing a 13-year career with a silver medal in the team sprint at the Commonwealth Games in July. The 33-year-old helped Britain's women's team sprint trio win the nation's first Olympic gold in that event at the 2024 Paris Games.
Marchant added World and European titles in the same year to her resume, which already included an individual sprint bronze on her Olympic debut at Rio in 2016. She said she considered extending her career to the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028 before deciding to step away after this summer's Commonwealth Games.
"I've achieved more than I could ever have dreamed of achieving," Marchant said. "It feels really strange. It's not been a difficult decision. Don't get me wrong, there have been moments where I've thought, 'could I just, should I just, what if I just?' But I know what it takes to push on for another two years."
"I'm incredibly proud of where I've got to and what I've done," Marchant said. "I just don't want to make those choices anymore to keep doing what it takes to get to LA."
