Raphinha Reflects on Barcelona Transformation Under Hansi Flick

BARCELONA — Two years after contemplating an exit from the club, Raphinha has emerged as a central figure for Barcelona, recently extending his contract through 2030. The Brazilian forward, now serving as captain, has transitioned into a central attacking role, scoring 12 goals in seven La Liga matches and two in the Champions League. His performance has been instrumental in Barcelona’s undefeated start to the season, with the team securing victories in their opening eight league fixtures.

The shift in position was born from necessity during the preseason following the departures of Robert Lewandowski, Ferran Torres, and Marcus Rashford. Head coach Hansi Flick identified Raphinha’s potential in the role after testing him in a friendly against Basel. "In pre-season we did a few tests: the manager liked what he saw and after Basel he told me a bit about his idea," Raphinha said. "Before Elche, he asked if I was comfortable there or wanted to go back to my position. I said it was fine, see how it goes."

Raphinha credits Flick with fundamentally altering his trajectory at the club. By 2024, the forward felt his time in Barcelona was nearing an end, but a direct conversation with the manager restored his confidence. "In my head, I knew I was leaving," Raphinha stated. "I met him and he said he trusted in me, that I was going to be important, that the team would be good for me. In a moment like that, a few small words can change you."

Now established as a leader, Raphinha emphasizes that his success is tied to the team's collective identity. Flick has lauded his captain's impact, noting, "As captain, he goes and everyone follows. We always start with the No 9 and he has that incredible hunger and intensity, the mentality and attitude we need." With his long-term future secured, Raphinha expressed a desire to conclude his career at the club.
