LISBON — Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a 30-day suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation after leaving the national team's international camp last month, with the federation's disciplinary council also imposing a fine of 255 euros (£189). The 41-year-old Al-Nassr forward, who has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, had been provisionally suspended on 9 October before the sanction was upheld in full on Monday.

The captain walked out of Portugal's Nations League squad in September after being an unused substitute against Norway and then learning he would not start against Denmark. In a lengthy statement, Ronaldo said Portugal coach Jorge Jesus had twice "broke his word", accusing him of an "absolute breach of trust".

The federation's disciplinary council said on Monday it had upheld the charge against Ronaldo in full, confirming the 30-day ban and the financial penalty. The decision formalises the provisional suspension imposed on 9 October following his departure from the squad.

Portugal have yet to confirm how the suspension will affect Ronaldo's availability for the next international window, with the record goalscorer now sidelined by the federation's ruling.
