MUNICH — Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital after collapsing while watching the club's second team train on Friday, the Bundesliga club have confirmed. The 40-year-old will undergo thorough examination and remain in medical care.

Kompany had been unwell with a virus and missed the pre-match news conference on Tuesday prior to Bayern's Champions League fixture against Arsenal, but the Belgian was on the touchline for the match. He collapsed while observing the session for FC Bayern's amateurs and required immediate medical treatment.

"Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's amateurs," the club said in a statement. "The first-team coach had been watching the second team's session. Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations."

Kompany was appointed Bayern manager in May 2024 and Bayern have said his coaching staff will oversee training and match operations for the time being. The German top-flight leaders are due to face Freiburg on Sunday as they continue their Bundesliga programme.
