IVINS — Austin Smotherman claimed his maiden PGA Tour title with a two-shot victory over Doug Ghim and David Ford at the Bank of Utah Championship at Black Desert Resort. The 32-year-old closed at 25-under to secure the win in his 100th start on the circuit, becoming the ninth first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season.
Smotherman took a one-shot lead into the final round after a huge birdie putt at the 18th on Saturday, with Ghim alongside him as his final-round playing partner following six birdies on the back nine to stay in contention for his own maiden title. Both birdied the first on Sunday before Smotherman seized control with back-to-back birdies at the fourth and fifth to stretch his advantage to three. Ghim answered with a birdie at the seventh, but slipped back with a bogey at the par-5 ninth after going out of bounds — the same mistake he made at the same hole the previous day.
The pair traded pars from the 10th through the 12th as David Ford and Trace Crowe tried to chase. Ford made back-to-back birdies at the 13th and 14th to reach 22-under alongside Crowe, while Crowe bogeyed the 13th to sit with Ben James and Luke Clanton, who had posted a 62 to finish at 21-under in the clubhouse. Smotherman then opened the door at the 13th, failing to escape a bunker at the first attempt and making double bogey to see his three-shot lead cut to one.
The lead swung again moments later when Ghim three-putted for bogey to hand Smotherman a two-shot cushion. Crowe eagled the 14th to get within one, but Smotherman responded immediately, driving the green at the short par-4 14th and converting birdie after his eagle putt from six feet slid left to move back to 25-under, two clear of Crowe and Ghim, who also birdied the 14th. Ford closed with a 64 and a birdie at the last to tie for second with Ghim and Crowe, who also birdied the 18th, but Smotherman held firm and birdied the last alongside Ghim to seal the title.
Reflecting on the win, Smotherman said: "It didn't have to be pretty. I got some nice bounces. Made some poor swings, but this game doesn't have to be perfect." The victory capped a volatile final round where he recovered from the double at 13 with the decisive birdie at 14 to hold off a crowded leaderboard.
