ST ANDREWS — Four-time DP World Tour winner and 2008 Ryder Cup star Oliver Wilson has confirmed the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship was his final event as a professional, closing a career spanning more than 20 years. The 46-year-old, who entered this week's tournament on a sponsor's invite 12 years after his maiden DP World Tour title at the same event, missed the cut by four after rounds of 72-72-70 through the opening three days.

Wilson shared a heartfelt message on social media to mark the moment, writing: "Over & Out! This week was my last event on the [DP World Tour] after 20+ years. It was my first & last start of the year, and I loved every bit of preparing to get back out there. Got my game in good shape and had it going nicely yesterday but came up a little short." He added: "There’s nowhere I’d rather finish than the Dunhill Links. Winning here will always be one of the highlights of my life, and walking these fairways one last time in tournament mode means a lot."

The former Augusta State University golfer turned professional in 2003 and reached his peak in the late 2000s, qualifying for Team Europe at the 2008 Ryder Cup under Nick Faldo. Europe were beaten 16.5 - 11.5 at Valhalla, but Wilson earned one point from two matches, partnering Henrik Stenson to a 2&1 victory over Phil Mickelson and Anthony Kim in the Saturday morning foursomes before losing to Boo Weekley in the Sunday singles. That same season he made two Masters appearances and finished inside the top-25 in the other three majors, with a best result of T19th at the PGA Championship.

After losing his European Tour card in 2011 and spending time on the Challenge Tour, Wilson arrived at the 2014 Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with nine runner-up finishes on the DP World Tour, ranked 792nd in the world and 252nd in the Race to Dubai. He held off Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood and Richie Ramsay to win by a stroke and secure his playing rights for at least two more seasons. Following further struggles toward the end of the 2010s, he mounted a resurgence in 2018 with two wins on what is now the HotelPlanner Tour and later won the 2022 Made In HimmerLand on the DP World Tour by one shot.

Wilson thanked the tournament and its patron Johann Rupert on 25 years of the event, his playing partner Steve Redgrave, and coach and caddie Doug Spencer, writing: "A huge thank you to [Doug Spencer] for getting me prepped and caddying all week and motivated this past couple of years. I’ve learnt a lot and can only wonder what might have been if we’d met sooner but either way it’s been an incredible ride." In recent years he has transitioned into broadcasting with BBC Sport and TNT Sports as part of its LIV Golf League coverage, alongside coaching.
