OKLAHOMA — Japan's Yuta Sugiura became just the fourth player ever to break 59 on the Korn Ferry Tour with a stunning 12-under 58 in the third round of the Compliance Solutions Championship on Saturday at The Patriot Golf Club. The 25-year-old vaulted from a share of 47th after opening rounds of 69 and 66 into contention on a remarkable day of low scoring in the penultimate event of the season.
Sugiura started fast with two birdies and another gain through six holes, then reeled off three consecutive birdies to close his front nine — the course's back nine — to make the turn in 29. An eagle on the par-5 first pushed the momentum further, though a bogey on the par-4 second threatened to stall the historic bid. He answered immediately with a bounce-back birdie, parred the fourth, then ripped four straight birdies coming home before a tap-in par on the par-3 ninth sealed the 58.
The round places Sugiura alongside Stephan Jaeger and Frankie Capan III in the exclusive sub-59 club on the Korn Ferry Tour, with all three still trailing Cristobal del Solar's all-time record. Del Solar shot a 13-under 57 in the first round of the 2024 Astara Golf Championship. Sugiura's 58 is the 19th sub-60 round in Korn Ferry Tour history and the third this year. It nearly had company Saturday, as William Sides and Ross Steelman both carded 60, with Sides lipping out on the final hole to stay at 10-under.
Scoring was exceptionally low across the board. Preferred lies and much calmer conditions helped five of the top seven on the leaderboard through 54 holes shoot either 60 or 61 on Saturday. Trent Phillips leads at 21-under, with Carson Young alone in second just one stroke back. Six players will begin the final round tied for third at 18-under.
Sugiura, the 2026 AdventHealth Championship winner, ended the day tied for eighth at 17-under, four strokes off the lead. He began the week 21st on the Korn Ferry Tour points list and is now likely to vault into the promotion places ahead of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship.
