CARDIFF — Nick Welsh sealed a dramatic overtime winner as Cardiff Devils fought back from 4-2 down to beat Coventry Blaze 5-4 on home ice and extend their perfect start to the 2026-27 Elite Ice Hockey League campaign to five wins from five.
Brandon Estes opened the scoring for the hosts before William Boysen cancelled out the effort to level at 1-1. The visitors then seized the initiative as Ryan Richardson put Blaze ahead and Marko Csollak added their third to make it 3-1.
Cardiff Devils hit back through Jimmy Oligny, only for Griffin Ness to restore Blaze's two-goal cushion at 4-2. The hosts responded before the end of the second period, with Ryan Barrow and Joey Martin both finding the net to level the contest at 4-4, a scoreline that held until Welsh struck in overtime to complete the comeback.
The result keeps Cardiff Devils perfect at the top of the early EIHL table. They now travel to face Dundee Stars on Sunday, 18 October for their next league fixture at 17:00 BST.
