DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings are close to locking up forward Alex DeBrincat on a seven-year extension worth approximately $13 million per season, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Tuesday. The 28-year-old is in the final season of his four-year deal signed on 9 July 2023 and had been set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
DeBrincat currently leads the Red Wings in goals (4) and points (8) this season. He has been the club's most productive attacker since arriving in 2023-24, leading the franchise in goals (111) and sitting second in points (230) over that span.
The report comes after a turbulent summer for the organisation that has bled into the regular season. Former general manager Steve Yzerman has stepped down, Dylan Larkin has had his captaincy stripped after requesting a trade, and restricted free agent defenceman Simon Edvinsson remains without a contract and has missed games.
Before joining Detroit, DeBrincat was a second-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2016 NHL Draft. He made his debut in the 2017-18 season and spent five seasons with the club before being traded to the Ottawa Senators on 7 July 2022. The Red Wings currently sit eighth in the Atlantic Division standings with a 1-3-2 record.
