ABU DHABI — Grant Dawson handed Nurullo Aliev the first defeat of his professional career at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, earning a unanimous decision victory by 29–27, 29–27, 29–27 on all three judges' scorecards.

Aliev, who entered 12-0, started sharply and forced Dawson to fight off the back foot against the fence. Blitzing forward, he landed a multiple-punch combination that forced a desperation takedown attempt from Dawson, which he defended before reversing to top position. Moments later Aliev dropped Dawson with a huge left straight and followed with a shot to the back of the head, immediately spotted by referee Marc Goddard, who issued a point deduction. Dawson found a second wind after the foul, landing solid strikes before securing a late takedown and threatening with a very tight guillotine choke as the round closed.

The American, who arrived 4-1 in his last five, took control as the bout progressed. Aliev continued to press early in the second but looked increasingly laboured, while Dawson worked in and out behind jabs and leg kicks. He dragged Aliev to the canvas to take full guard, landing elbows and short punches on top, and remained the far fresher fighter as Aliev's own takedown attempt failed late in the round. Needing a finish after the deduction, Aliev came forward with reckless abandon in the third, but Dawson answered with an elbow up the middle, a spinning kick to the body and superior speed and energy.

Dawson scrambled to top position after an early takedown attempt in the final frame and, after a brief return to the feet, secured his fifth takedown of the fight. He smothered Aliev with top pressure and moved to full mount, where he remained until the final horn. Afterwards Dawson dedicated the victory to his family and religion, revealing he has a daughter on the way, as the win on enemy territory positions him for a climb up the lightweight rankings.
