JOHANNESBURG — Lions overpowered Ospreys 35-19 with a six-try second-half onslaught at Ellis Park in the United Rugby Championship on Saturday, overturning a 12-10 half-time deficit to secure a bonus-point victory in Johannesburg.

Mark Jones' Ospreys, captained for the first time by wing Keelan Giles, trailed early to a Chris Smith penalty before Lions wing Erich Cronje opened the try scoring in the 28th minute from turnover ball. Ospreys responded immediately when centre Keiran Williams finished powerfully from Evardi Boshoff's offload, also from a turnover, and then led at the break after hooker Efan Daniel crossed from a driving line-out with the last play of the half.

Lions, who enjoyed set-piece dominance, struck back quickly after the restart through the same method as hooker PJ Botha and replacement Morne Brandon scored from driving line-outs. Full-back Boeta Chamberlain crossed in the 57th minute following Francke Horn's flat offload to secure the four-try bonus point before the hour, and Wales fly-half Dan Edwards was yellow-carded for a high tackle on the hour as wing Kelly Mpeku added two further tries down the right. Replacement flanker Ross Moriarty scored Ospreys' third try with the final play to deny a scoreless second half.

Smith endured an off-day from the tee with only one conversion and one penalty, preventing a heavier margin. Ospreys started the 2026-27 season with a four-try bonus point in defeat by Sharks in Durban but left Johannesburg with nothing, while Lions built on their opening win over Leinster and their strong home record last season. Ospreys now return to Wales for a derby against Dragons at Rodney Parade on Friday, 9 October (19:45 BST).
