WASHINGTON — Katie Boulter suffered a first-round exit at the Mubadala DC Open with a 3-6 6-2 6-2 defeat to world No. 67 Ashlyn Krueger, while in Mexico Cameron Norrie ended a six-match losing streak on the ATP Tour with a 6-4 6-1 victory over world No. 95 Aleksandar Kovacevic at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo.
Boulter, making her first appearance since a first-round exit at Wimbledon, dominated the opening set in Washington. She broke in the seventh game after Krueger sent a backhand long and broke again two games later to take the set 6-3. Krueger, who made 16 unforced errors in the first set, responded sharply in the second, breaking Boulter twice to level the match 6-2. The final set turned after Boulter saved two break points to hold and then moved ahead 2-0, but Krueger broke three times over the next five games to close out the 3-6 6-2 6-2 win.
In Los Cabos, Norrie secured his first ATP Tour victory since April despite an uneven start. He dropped serve in the opening game against Kovacevic before immediately leveling, then saved two break points to hold. The first set stayed tight with the pair trading breaks in the eighth and ninth games before Norrie edged it 6-4. He then shifted momentum decisively in the second, racing to a 4-1 lead and closing out the 6-4 6-1 win in just over half an hour.
Krueger will now face four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka in the second round in Washington, while Norrie will meet either Aidan Mayo or Jamie Duckworth for a place in the next round in Mexico.
