SHANGHAI — Arthur Gea continued a remarkable Masters 1000 debut on Tuesday night, beating Czech No. 13 seed Jakub Mensik 7-6 (4), 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Rolex Shanghai Masters. The 21-year-old Frenchman, ranked No. 56, is now guaranteed a top 50 debut at No. 44 or better after his second straight-sets win over a seeded opponent.
Serve dominated the opening set with neither player able to break, forcing a tie-break. Gea dropped the first point on his own serve before sweeping the next six points, including two mini-breaks against Mensik, showing the same composure he had displayed in two tie-breaks against Ben Shelton in the previous round. The second set followed a similarly tight pattern, Gea saving a break point at 1-2 and needing five game points to hold before pouncing at 2-2 when Mensik badly mishit a smash at deuce, breaking on his third opportunity with a brilliant passing shot.
Gea will face Pole Hubert Hurkacz or Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No. 25 seed, for a place in the semi-finals. His run in Shanghai has built on the biggest win of his career in the third round, when he beat American No. 3 seed Ben Shelton 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3) — Shelton is ranked World No. 4 — having earlier opened with a 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-2 win over Portugal's Jaime Faria and a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over compatriot Ugo Humbert, the No. 30 seed. The win over Mensik, ranked No. 15, took his record against top 20 opponents to 4-1.
For Mensik, a quarter-finalist in Shanghai in 2024, the defeat ended a 21-match winning run on hard courts against players ranked outside the top 50 and his bid to become the youngest man to reach multiple quarter-finals at the event. The Czech had beaten Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-3 and Argentina's No. 21 seed Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to reach the fourth round.
The breakthrough caps a rapid rise for Gea, who began the season ranked No. 241. He qualified for his Grand Slam main-draw debut at the Australian Open, won his first Challenger title in Noumea and reached Challenger finals in Zadar and Granby, before winning his first ATP title in Los Cabos to break into the top 100. At the US Open he lost in the final round of qualifying but entered as a lucky loser and reached the fourth round, matching the best run by a lucky loser at a Grand Slam, and he won three matches in Beijing before arriving in Shanghai, where victory over Mensik extended his tour-level record since July to 13-2.
