LONDON — Team Europe reclaimed the Laver Cup with a commanding 13-5 victory over Team World at The O2 in London on Sunday, as newly crowned US Open champion Alexander Zverev secured the winning points to complete the triumph. The decisive result on the final day returned the trophy to Europe in front of the London crowd.
Zverev, who won the French Open and US Open titles this year, clinched the trophy in the second match of Sunday's finale, defeating Learner Tien 7-6 (7-3) 6-3. He edged a tight opening set in a tiebreak before closing out the second set in straight sets to deliver the points required for the 13-5 overall success.
Team Europe had moved to within one win of the title earlier on Sunday behind a commanding doubles display from Flavio Cobolli and Jakub Mensik. After initially falling a break behind against Team World's Alex de Minaur and Taylor Fritz, Cobolli and Mensik settled into rhythm and took control, racing past the World pair 7-5 6-3 to stretch Europe's lead to 10-5.
The back-to-back victories on Sunday sealed the regained title for Europe at the London arena and completed the weekend's scoring. With the Laver Cup decided, live tennis continues with the WTA 1000 China Open available live on Sky Sports from Wednesday.
