SHANGHAI — Alexander Zverev's mixed fortunes at the Shanghai Masters continued as he and Brazilian veteran Marcelo Melo suffered a first-round doubles defeat to Luke Johnson and Sander Arends, days after Zverev opened his singles campaign with victory over Wu Yibing in the second round.

The early exit extends a difficult doubles season for the German. Through 20 matches in 2026 Zverev is 9-11, with eight of those wins coming alongside Melo — including four en route to their title at the Mexican Open in February — and one further victory alongside Casper Ruud at the Laver Cup. The German-Brazilian duo have not won back-to-back matches together since that triumph and have now lost six first-round matches this year, often against more established doubles specialists, and Zverev sits 102nd in the Live ATP doubles rankings, 100 places below his singles standing.

Notably, Zverev did not contest doubles at any of the four Grand Slams this season, a period in which he captured both the French Open and the US Open to end his wait for a major singles title. He has yet to win a singles title at Masters 1000, ATP 500 or ATP 250 level in 2026, a statistic that has prompted discussion over whether his doubles commitments at those events have added pressure heading into 2027 scheduling.

Attention now turns to singles, where Zverev will face France's Quentin Halys on Sunday, 11 October. Zverev leads their head-to-head 3-0 with wins in Miami, Paris and New York this year, but Halys pushed him to five sets in the second round of the US Open last month, where Zverev prevailed 6-4, 4-6, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3. The 29-year-old Frenchman will offer another stern test.

The German, a former finalist in Shanghai after losing to Daniil Medvedev in the 2019 final, could meet Alexander Bublik or Brandon Nakashima in the fourth round, with Alex de Minaur, Rei Sakamoto, Karen Khachanov or Adrian Mannarino potential quarter-final opponents. Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe loom as possible semi-final rivals before a projected final against Carlos Alcaraz, with this year's Shanghai Masters final scheduled for 18 October.
