LONDON — Chelsea delivered a statement of renewed resilience with a 1-0 victory over rivals Arsenal on Sunday, extending their Women's Super League unbeaten run to 12 games and moving to within two points of leaders Manchester City. The result, sealed by Alyssa Thompson's winner after Keira Walsh's strike was parried into her path, followed a tame 1-1 draw with Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge to open the season and marked a third straight win.

Manager Sonia Bompastor said her side were prepared to "mentally fight" and able to "adjust" to Arsenal's pressure in a way they did not last season. Chelsea executed her gameplan with a defensive masterclass, recording a third successive clean sheet and extending their run without conceding to 315 minutes. "In this league, you have so many different opponents and you have to be able to adjust and do something different," Bompastor said. "I've been talking a lot about that, to be strong and to be together, I always want to see a group of players who are together in those high and low moments. We came into this game well prepared. We knew we would have moments in the game where we were not in control. We prepared for those moments. We knew exactly where we wanted them to take the ball and where to leave some spaces. We were really strong mentally and physically."

England midfielder Keira Walsh, 29, was a standout performer and her flourishing new partnership with 20-year-old Lexi Potter has allowed Walsh to push further forward with more freedom. Bompastor described Walsh as "a boss on the pitch" when she reaches those levels, helping the team have "better foundations." Up front, Thompson has consistently delivered, while summer signing Melvine Malard from Manchester United has added a new outlet. The French striker missed the opening two matches with a minor injury but scored on her debut against Birmingham City and caused havoc against Arsenal. "She's massive for us. She puts in work off the ball and sets off the press," Walsh said of Malard. "Her awareness of people around her and her ability... She's an incredible striker and she will be very good for us." The press led by Malard has moved higher, full-back Ellie Carpenter continues to overlap dangerously, and Katie McCabe — who joined Chelsea from Arsenal in the summer — has brought leadership and bite.

The response follows a difficult 2025-26 campaign when Chelsea's six-year stranglehold on the WSL ended despite Bompastor leading the club to an unbeaten domestic treble in her first season in charge. Manchester City overtook them at the top, and many expected Arsenal to be the main challengers this season after strong summer recruitment. After the opening 1-1 draw with Villa, where Chelsea lacked ruthlessness and a defensive mistake gifted the visitors a goal, Bompastor's side have turned dominant performances into results. Arsenal, in contrast, sit seventh, seven points behind City, with one victory in their first four WSL games and just two goals scored.

Bompastor admitted Chelsea are "a different team from last season" and Thompson said the victory over the Gunners was "amazing for team morale" as the Blues look to put pressure on City, who face Arsenal next in the WSL on Sunday at 16:30 BST. "We've got both sides to our game and we showed that tonight in spells. Everyone was fighting for each other. Every first and second ball was ours," Walsh added. The win follows Thompson's 1-0 winner against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge and leaves little doubt Chelsea believe they can challenge for the title again.
