EDMONTON — Tanner Boser gave his hometown crowd exactly what they came for at UFC Edmonton on Saturday night, dominating Jhonata Diniz to secure a third-round TKO victory. The Canadian heavyweight forced referee Jason Herzog to intervene at 4:26 of round three after sustained ground-and-pound, earning Team Canada its first win of the night.
Boser walked out to a standing ovation and was forced to weather early pressure as Diniz attacked the lead leg and landed a clean counter left hand. The Canadian answered by shooting for a takedown, repositioning Diniz parallel to the fence to deny a wall-walk and maintaining heavy control. He stepped on Diniz’s ankle to drag him back down when the Brazilian briefly reached his feet, closing the opening round on top after the pair exchanged strikes to the horn.
After wild striking exchanges early in the second, Boser again turned to his wrestling and landed in side control with just under three minutes remaining. From there he unleashed punishing ground-and-pound, securing a crucifix position and landing heavy elbows and right hands that opened a cut on Diniz’s head. He advanced to mount and kept the pressure on until the horn, leaving the Brazilian to survive to the final frame.
Boser called for noise from the Edmonton crowd before the third and quickly blasted through on a single leg to take full mount with more than four minutes left. He took Diniz’s back as the Brazilian tried to build to his knees, hammering away with punches as Herzog repeatedly warned Diniz to defend himself intelligently. With Diniz exhausted and unable to improve position, Herzog stepped in to halt the bout.
The victory capped a wrestling-heavy, one-sided performance for Boser, who made Diniz work for every inch of space across three rounds. It followed Cerminara's late TKO over Stiller earlier at UFC Edmonton.
